Information Regarding Year 11
Posted: 5/01/21
You will be aware that there was a government announcement last night regarding a national lockdown, including school closures for the majority of students. Mr Amin has written a separate letter explaining how the school will operate during lockdown, but I feel it is important to address specific Year 11 concerns, particularly around exams and student wellbeing.
Last night we were informed by the government that ‘it is not possible or fair for all exams to go ahead this summer as normal. The Education Secretary will work with Ofqual to put in place alternative arrangements.’ Clearly, this means that the summer assessments will look very different for our current Year 11 students and we are waiting for more information in terms of what the ‘alternative arrangements’ will look like. When we have more information, we will share it with you as I know this will be an area of concern.
However, during the next few weeks it is extremely important that Year 11 students continue to engage with their live lessons and complete all work that is set, especially as the work completed might be needed to inform future assessments.
We recognise the potential impact of the lockdown on students’ mental health and urge students to engage in positive routines where they eat healthily, exercise regularly and establish healthy sleep patterns. Following the remote learning timetable will support good routines and provide a clear structure for the day.
It is equally important that students remain motivated. They still have at least five months to make progress in their subject areas and gain the necessary skills and knowledge in order to pursue their next steps in September. During this time, we will be reviewing every student’s individual needs and implementing virtual interventions accordingly. Interventions might have an academic and/or pastoral focus - our aim is to support students however we can so they finish their KS4 years with confidence. More information will follow shortly.
Furthermore, please encourage students to regularly check the Year 11 Google Classroom. We will update it regularly in terms of notices, supportive messages and advice.
We would like to remind you that we are here to support all of you during the next few weeks. Please get in touch with myself, Mr Haines or Mrs Mills if you have any queries - no question is too small!
Kind regards,
Justine Sheehan
