World Book Day 6th March
Posted: 14/02/25

We are very excited to be celebrating World Book Day this year with a week's worth of events running from 3rd-7th March, including a dress up day, bake-off, read-along and open mic event! The information below lets you know how you can support your child to get involved. For a full programme of events, please see the attached poster.
Monday 3rd March
For ALL students
Book Bake-off: Students are invited to bake/decorate a book-themed cake and bring it to the library for judging. PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE A NUT-FREE SCHOOL - please provide a list of ingredients with your cake so that we can flag up any food allergies. We will host a cake sale at lunch time to raise money for the Library - 50p per slice.
Tuesday 4th March
For Years 7 and 8 (and performers in older years)
Lunchtime 'Live in the Library' open mic event: Can you sing, play an instrument, read a monologue, perform stand-up comedy? Sign up in the library to perform in our book-themed open mic event, or get a free ticket to join the audience.
Thursday 6th March
For Years 7 and 8 (and Student Librarians/Library club members in Year 9)
Dress Up Day: Years 7 and 8 students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character for the day in exchange for a £1 donation payable via ParentPay. Please note that students should come in costume, not just casual clothes - this is not a normal mufti day! We love home made outfits and there is no need to spend money on a specific costume. Students who do not wish to wear a costume should come to school in their uniform as usual. Staff will be dressing up too and there will be prizes for best costumes! Donations will fund the development of our Wellbeing book collection.
Friday 7th March
For ALL students
Build a poem: Visit the library to take part in a communal poem writing activity using building blocks and imagination.
All week, for ALL students
Quiz: Take part in our World Book Day character quiz posted outside the library - correct answers win a prize!
Vouchers: The World Book Day theme this is year is 'Read Your Way' - a celebration of all the different ways to access books and find fun in reading! Every Oaks Park student is able to collect a free book voucher, worth £1, from the Library. This can be exchanged at book shop or supermarket for a special World Book Day book, or put towards another book of their choice. Please see the World Book Day website for further details on how to take part: https://www.worldbookday.com/families/
Sora Reading App: We encourage everyone to check out our new online virtual library https://soraapp.com/home where students can access books, magazines, audio books and more for FREE. Instructions on signing up are available here: https://oaksparkhigh.org.uk/6016/sora-free-e-reading-app
Donations: As we are sure you're aware, running a school library is a costly business, and we are always in need of new books and resources. If you would like to support our work and help us to run even more fun events for students, we have set up a donation link on ParentPay so that families can donate £1 if they wish to. We also gratefully receive donations of good quality second-hand children's books.
You can see photos and updates during the week on the Library's Twitter/X account @Oaks_LRC and on the school website.
If you have any questions or comments please email LRC@oaksparkhighschool.org.
Thank you so much for helping us to celebrate the joy of reading!
